기존 벽제 화장장의 규모와 시설이 협소, 노호화하여 기존 위치 뒤에 신축한 이 화장장은 삶과 죽음에 대한 건축공간적 표현을 위해 노력한 프로젝트이다. 死體(사체)의 인도 처리과정이 경건하게 이루어지도록 동선계통이 각기 다른 공간을 통하게 되고, 의식과정의 동선이 중복되지 않도록 철저한 동선분리를 꾀하였다. 高至(지고)의 의식이라는 점에서 내부공간은 각기 절차상 필요에 따라 공간을 의도적으로 과장하거나 축소시키고 각 공간이 빛과 그림자와의 결합을 통하여 연속되는 체계를 가지면서 결국은 삶의 가치를 강조할 수 있도록 배려하였다.
The design of this new crematorium, established at the back of the existing old and facility-limited crematorium, attempted to focus on the representation of the life and death in an architectural space. To ensure pious delivery and processing of bodies, it is designed so that each process of the cremating event takes place at separate places. Given the fact that this is the most sacred ceremony, the inner spaces are at times simplified or magnified intentionally as needed in accordance with each cremation process. Each space brings about the image of continuity as it is placed where the light and the shade meets, which ultimately emphasizes the value of the life.
